Each year, our community relies on the courage, compassion, and commitment of our first responders—those who put others first when it matters most. As we close out hurricane season, the End of Hurricane Season Party presented by Storm Smart is proud to honor one outstanding first resonder to receive the First Responder Hero of the Year Award whose service between October 2024 and October 2025 exemplifies leadership and heart.
We invite you to nominate a firefighter, EMT, paramedic, law enforcement officer, 911 dispatcher, or healthcare worker who has made a meaningful difference in the lives of others. Nominations are open to anyone who lives or works in Lee County.
The winner will be recognized at the event on November 29, 2025 at the Alliance for the Arts, and will be presented with a special token of gratitude created by a local artist.
Nominations will be evaluated based on:

Andy Newman, Newman PR (agency of record for the Monroe County TDC) was looking for publicity to remind tourists from around the world Key West and The Florida Keys survived with minimal damage, and to please visit, asked Julie McEnroe, Pirates in Paradise Festival organizer, to include the event in their 10-day festival. And so, the tradition began. The burning of the Hurricane Flags in Key West has been an annual Key West Celebration ever since.
The End of Hurricane Season Flag Burning Celebration spread to Fort Myers, initially as an annual house party, then in 2019 was held at the Yucatan Beach Stand on Fort Myers Beach . When Hurricane Ian struck the area in 2022, the Celebration moved to Centennial Park in Downtown Fort Myers to bid good riddance to the destructive 2022 hurricane season and to help bring the community together to heal and recover.
